Feeling Accomplished

Even though it was an all-consuming undertaking, I’m so glad I pushed myself to participate in a market. On October 19, I set up my first booth at the Princeton Shopping Center Sunday Market, organized by Brilliant Conventions who organize markets across New Jersey.

Preparing for the fair was a crash course in every aspect of running an art business — logistics, pricing, packaging, production, payment systems, booth design, etc. From mid-September through mid-October, it completely took over my evenings and weekends. I even set up a mock booth in my yard (twice) to test the layout, fix gaps, and refine the overall presentation. It was so much work — but seeing everything come together, and being able to see my work on display, made it worth it. (It also helps that I’ve passed the worst of the learning curve so that the next one will be easier.)

I was grateful to everyone who stopped by to chat, browse, and support me — including Dawn from Perfectly Imperfect Creations, whose kindness and advice made a huge difference. We first met at an earlier market, and she was so generous in sharing her experience and checking in on me the day of the fair.

In the end, I got through it and learned more than I knew I needed to know. It felt great to stand beside my display — art prints, cards, scarves, and gifts — and to see people connect with my work. For now, I’m enjoying a mix of relief and accomplishment. I probably won’t do another market this year, but I’m already looking forward to spring!
