Inspired by repeated walks through familiar places, these pieces explore the beauty that often goes unnoticed in everyday surroundings.
The Beauty of Familiar Places
The area in and around Princeton, New Jersey is probably best known for Princeton University, but it is also home to woodlands, rivers, gardens, preserved farmland, and neighborhoods filled with quiet surprises.
These are places I return to again and again during walks, errands, school pickups, and moments carved out between obligations. Familiarity has not diminished them. Instead, repeated visits seem to reveal more with time.
A changing sky reflected in water, roots pushing through pavement, leaves gathering along a curb, or the brief appearance of a bird in morning light often become the starting point for new work.
This collection celebrates the beauty that exists close to home and the rewards of paying attention long enough to notice it.
Some discoveries ask little of us except that we notice.
Viola on Witherspoon Street was inspired by an unexpected encounter during an ordinary afternoon of running errands in Princeton, New Jersey. Tucked into a narrow crack between the sidewalk and surrounding pavement, a small cluster of violas had somehow found a way to grow and bloom amid weathered concrete and passing footsteps.
The cheerful blooms and soft green leaves contrast beautifully against their unlikely surroundings, thriving quietly in a place that many people would walk past without ever seeing them.
